Cyber Attacks Reach 'Disturbing' Level in Britain - Voice of America (blog)

The director of Britain's Government Communications Headquarters says government and industry are facing cyberattacks on a daily basis.

Iain Lobban says cyberattacks have reached a "disturbing" level and could pose a threat to Britain's economic well-being. The attacks range from significant attempts to steal information from security contractors to using the Internet databases to steal identities and have included Britain's Foreign Office.

Prime Minister David Cameron's special representative on cyber security, Pauline-Neville Jones, says China and Russia are some of the main culprits in cyberattacks.

Britain is hosting a major international conference on the management of cyberspace beginning Tuesday. The two-day conference will include U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and senior representatives from China, Russia, India and other countries, as well as leading industry officials.

Foreign Secretary William Hague convened the conference, saying he believes more international cooperation is important to tackle cyber issues, but he does not expect the conference will produce a consensus on what should be done.
