Google treats Taiwanese, Korean partners the same: chairman - Focus Taiwan News Channel

Taipei, Nov. 9 (CNA) Google Inc. Chairman Eric Schmidt said Wednesday that Google treats its partners in Taiwan and South Korea the same since they are in a competition that benefits consumers.

"In the Android ecosystem, we have partners not just in Taiwan and Korea, but all around the world. And all are looking at pretty much the same thing," Schmidt said during a panel discussion at a local forum.

The question of Google's treatment of its Taiwanese and South Korean partners was raised by the moderator after he noticed that Schmidt was carrying a Samsung mobile phone.

What really matters to Google, Schmidt said, is whether consumers will benefit from the competition among Android peers who are striving to make good products.

In the panel discussion, Acer Inc. Founder Stan Shih said Samsung is an aggressive competitor, while Taiwanese companies tend to favor partnerships.

He urged Google to balance the shared interests among all stakeholders in the Android ecosystem if it wants to sustain operation of the open platform.

Schmidt was invited to Taipei to deliver a keynote speech titled "The Incredible Exploration" on how the IT industry engages in innovation, as well as to take part in the panel discussion.

Before coming to Taiwan, Schmidt visited Samsung Electronics Co. in South Korea, the world's biggest Android device maker and a supplier to Google's Chromebook laptop.

A number of Taiwanese companies, including HTC, Acer and Asustek, are also making smartphones and tablet computers that run on the Android platform.

Schmidt gave the assurance that the Android operating system will maintain its openness and fairness to all players, despite Google's plan to acquire U.S. phone hardware maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. for US$12.5 billion (NT$375.6 billion).

During his one-day visit, Schmidt was also expected to meet with several leaders in the technology field in Taiwan, including Cher Wang of HTC Corp. and Jonney Shih of Asustek Computer Inc. (By Jeffrey Wu) ENDITEM /pc
