Iran closer to making nukes - gulfnews.com

Dubai: The Iranian government has mastered the critical steps needed to build a nuclear weapon after receiving assistance from foreign scientists, the Washington Post reported.

Citing unnamed western diplomats and nuclear experts familiar with new intelligence to be released to UN watchdog the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the newspaper said a former Soviet weapons scientist had allegedly tutored the Iranians on building high-precision detonators of the kind used to trigger a nuclear chain reaction.

Crucial technology linked to experts in Pakistan and North Korea also helped propel Iran to the threshold of nuclear capability, the report said. Read full story

An intelligence update was expected to be circulated among IAEA members on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Russia's foreign minister on Monday warned that any military strike against Iran would be a grave mistake.

"This would be a very serious mistake fraught with unpredictable consequences," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said when asked about reports that Israel planned a military strike against Iran.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said that sanctions against Iran should be toughened and that "everything must be done" to avoid a military conflict while Germany said it would call for fresh "pressure" on Iran.
