WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is praising the Arab League for suspending Syria's membership, highlighting what he called the group's leadership in seeking to end attacks on peaceful protesters.
Obama says the vote shows the increasing diplomatic isolation of President Bashar Assad's government, which he says engages in "callous violence."
In a statement Saturday, Obama said the Assad regime has failed to keep its commitments. The president said the Arab League has shown leadership in its effort to end the 8-month-old crisis and hold the Syrian government accountable.
The league voted Saturday to suspend Syria and warned that it could face sanctions if it does not end its bloody crackdown on anti-government demonstrators. The vote was a symbolic blow to a country that prides itself on its commitment to Arab nationalism.
