Father of Loud - The Sun

Pioneering Brit Jim Marshall, who died aged 88, created the iconic amps used by some of the globe's greatest guitarists, past and present.

They include Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Pete Townshend, Kurt Cobain and Noel Gallagher. The amps were also favoured by The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and Blur.

Ex-drummer Jim, who ran a music shop in Hanwell, West London, began building amps in the early 1960s.

And he soon became a pivotal figure in the rock 'n' roll boom.

Former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash said online: "The news of Jim Marshall passing is deeply saddening. R&R will never be the same w/out him. But his amps will live on FOREVER!"

A statement on the Marshall Amps website said the "guv'nor" was a legend responsible for the "sound of rock", along with guitar makers Leo Fender and Les Paul. It added: "We are happy in the knowledge he is now in a much better place, which has just got a whole lot louder."

Jim, who quietly donated millions of pounds to worthy causes, was awarded The Queen's Award for exports in 1984.

His company celebrated a half-century in business this year.
