Mike Williamson believes Newcastle can claim a spot in next season's Champions League after victory over Liverpool in the Premier League.
The Magpies swept to a 2-0 victory thanks to a double from Papiss Cisse which extended their winning run to three matches and moves them level on points with Chelsea.
Williamson produced a fine display at the heart of defence for his side and he believes that if Newcastle can keep producing their great form this season then there is no reason why a top-four finish can't be achieved.
"It's massive. It keeps the momentum going. It keeps the dream alive of getting a high as finish as possible," he told Sky Sports.
"We played against a team who could break defences at any minute. We had to be on our guard and I think we limited their chances well.
"We defended from the front and I think the whole team deserves credit.
"If we carry on like we do working hard and performing like that then anything is possible."
Newcastle goalkeeper Tim Krul heaped praise on his teammate and his defensive partner James Perch who ensured chances for the Reds' front pair of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez were at a premium.
"They did fantastic. Perchy stepped in and at centre-half, he was fantastic today. The two lads in front of me blocked everything and I didn't have to make a proper save today."
Krul was also impressed with Papiss Cisse who scored both of the home side's two goals at the Sports Direct Arena.
The 26-year-old Senegal international has made a great impact since joining the club in the January transfer window and has scored seven goals in the seven Premier League matches he has played.
"He's a fantastic striker," the Dutchman added.
"He shows it day in and day out in training, he's just a proper goal scorer. Give him one chance and he puts it in the back of the net.
"He's a typical number nine for Newcastle and I'm really pleased we signed a top class player like him."
Krul was however upset that his former teammate Carroll appeared to dive in order to win his side a penalty in the first half with the score still goalless.
The 22-year-old rounded the keeper before theatrically going to ground when there appeared to be no contact and Krul confirmed he had not touched the striker.
"He just went over. He dived," he said.
"I never touched him. He was looking for a penalty, what all strikers try to do.
"He didn't get it and I think the referee was at a good angle to see it wasn't a penalty."
