Armed robber dies in bungled raid on bookmakers - AFP

LONDON — A masked gunman has died after customers pinned him down as he attempted an armed robbery on a bookmakers, police said.

The man in his 50s stormed into a branch of Ladbrokes in Plymouth, Devon, shortly before 7pm wearing a gas mask and holding a pistol.

Customers stepped in and disarmed the man and held him on the floor, Devon and Cornwall Police said.

The man was unconscious when police arrived and arrested him. He was pronounced dead at the scene soon after.

A police spokesman said: "It quickly became clear the man was unresponsive and an ambulance was immediately requested by police who carried out CPR until they arrived.

"A few minutes later three paramedics arrived at the scene and continued to carry out further CPR.

"Around 20 minutes later the man was declared dead at the scene by the paramedics."

Police said the incident had been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Chief Inspector Ian Drummond-Smith described it as "a very serious incident" but said: "We cannot speculate on what has actually taken place here today."
