A chance to tell Coalition how we feel - Mirror.co.uk

Most governments get a honeymoon period from voters - but that time is already up for the Coalition.

It has rushed headlong into the deepest, harshest cuts ever inflicted on the British people, which will drag the country back to an age when only the rich could live without worry.

This Thursday the voters of Oldham East and Saddleworth have a wonderful opportunity to speak for the nation and tell the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats what they think about the way Britain is being run.

There is the VAT increase which particularly hits ordinary families, especially the poor. There is the huge increase in student fees. Senseless attacks on the NHS and schools. And the sharp cut in police funding will hit Oldham hard.

For all those reasons and more, although this byelection was caused by the removal of a Labour MP, it is Labour which could and should win.

Leader Ed Miliband visited the constituency again yesterday. The tide is moving his way.

But, as he pointed out, there is one thing which could prevent a notable and telling victory. If voters stay away, it is possible that the Lib Dems - or even the Conservatives - might win by default.

That would signal to the coalition that they could carry on slashing, when they need to be told loud and clear that the cuts are not acceptable.

Just occasionally, the people of one constituency get the chance to speak for us all. The voters of Oldham East and Saddleworth must do just that this Thursday.
