The Daily Telegraph understands the child will likely be born in America, where the couple have called home since 2007, contrary to reports of a move back to Britain.
Beckham, the former Manchester United star and England captain, currently plays football for the Los Angeles Galaxy and his wife has created a burgeoning fashion career.
"David and Victoria Beckham are delighted to confirm they are expecting their fourth child in the summer," a spokeswoman for Mrs Beckham said yesterday.
"Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz are very excited about the arrival of their new brother or sister." She declined to comment further.
Beckham also announced the pregnancy on his Facebook page.
"I've got some great news to tell you all," he said.
"Victoria and I are expecting our fourth child this summer.
"The boys are very excited about the arrival of a new brother or sister."
The planned pregnancy comes just weeks after Mrs Beckham, a former pop star-turned fashion designer, indicated her wish for a baby girl.
Messages of congratulations were sent to the couple via Twitter, the micro-bloggin site from celebrities including Kylie Minogue, the Australian pop-star and Amanda Holden, who recently announced she was pregnant.
On Sunday it was also announced that Beckham, 35, will be training in Britain for the next few months with Tottenham Hotspurs during the Major League Soccer off-season after receiving permission from his team.
"I would safely imagine the baby will be born in the US (as) they have no plans to move to the UK," a source close to the couple told The Daily Telegraph.
"The States is where they now call home - they are just in Britain until February whilst David does pre-season training with Tottenham and Victoria finishes off her collection for New York Fashion Week at the same time.
"As with all her previous pregnancies, whilst she remains happy and healthy it is business as usual."
Another friend added: "They hope everything goes according to plan and the baby is a healthy and happy one. Victoria is feeling fine."
Simon Fuller, David and Victoria Beckham's manager and long term business partner, also offered his congratulations.
"I'm absolutely thrilled for them," he said.
"Family means everything to David and Victoria and this is simply the best news they and the boys could have wished for at the start of 2011."
The baby news comes just months after Beckham filed a lawsuit against a US celebrity weekly that published unproven claims that he slept with a prostitute.
US magazine, In Touch, published the claims by Irma Nici, 26, who billed herself on her website as "the world's most sought-after call girl" and charged up to $10,000 per night for her services.
She alleged that she slept with Beckham in a New York hotel room in August 2007, shortly after he joined the Galaxy team, and at Claridge's hotel in London a month later.
A spokesman for the Footballer has said the claims were "completely untrue and totally ridiculous" and "utter nonsense".
In an interview with the February issue of Vogue magazine Mrs Beckham said that she was open to the idea of another child but resigned to the fact that she may never have a daughter.
"Maybe one day another baby, but at this stage I think the chances of a girl are quite slim," she told the magazine, which placed her on the cover this month for a sixth time.
The news will certainly boost "Brand Beckham".
The sportsman tops football's rich list, with the most recent estimate placing his fortune at £125 million. He has multi-million pound sponsorship deals with Adidas, Giorgio Armani and Motorola.
His 11-year marriage to Victoria is also a marketable commodity.
The couple have a his-and-hers fragrance line, the latest product of which is called Intimately Yours and is "designed to capture the essence of David and Victoria Beckham's passion and the power of their relationship".
The couple were recently featured in an advert that shows them enjoying a passionate encounter in a lift.
