LONDON - A teenager has been sentenced to more than two years in jail for throwing a fire extinguisher at police officers from a roof during violent student protests in London.
Eighteen-year-old Edward Woollard admitted he hurled the metal extinguisher, which landed close to a group of police officers gathered near the Millbank complex, headquarters to the Conservative Party.
Woollard was one of hundreds of students who split away from a street protest against rising tuition fees on Nov. 10 to storm the building. Dozens of rioters broke into the building, while others lit fires outside.
A judge at Southwark Crown Court said Tuesday that although the sentence was harsh for Woollard, abusing the right to a peaceful protest cannot be tolerated.
