Margaret John, the actor who played flirtatious pensioner Doris in BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey, has died aged 84.

John died in hospital in her home town of Swansea early today after a short illness, but was working until last month. Tributes were paid today by the cast of the Barry Island and Billericay-based series.

James Corden, Gavin & Stacey's co-writer and star, wrote on Twitter: "All my thoughts are with the family of Margaret John who played Doris in G and S. A great actress and an incredible lady. She will be missed." Co-star Rob Brydon called her a "wonderful person".

John's agent, Gemma McAvoy, told the Guardian: "She was very busy and recently shot Game of Thrones in Belfast, an HBO series and she was also appearing in Welsh TV drama Alys. She always said she never wanted to retire.

"She really enjoyed playing Doris and said that as you get older you can get away with saying cheekier things."

John, a widow with no children, became a cult figure after playing Stacey's toyboy-obsessed neighbour Doris, with Facebook groups dedicated to her and people shouting out catchphrases in the street.

Her character's best moments include turning up with ex-Hear'Say singer Noel Sullivan as her date to a christening. Her character was noted for her one-liners, such as the time when she propositioned Gavin, saying she was "very open-minded and discrete".

John's varied career included roles in Radio 4 dramas, Doctor Who, Little Britain, Coronation Street and David Schwimmer's 2007 film Run Fatboy Run alongside Simon Pegg.

She also starred in the low-budget film A Bit of Tom Jones, a bawdy farce about the Welsh singer's penis.
