DAVID Miliband spurned the chance to run on a “dream ticket” with Ed Balls to ... - Mirror.co.uk

Lord Mandelson said he urged Mr Miliband to join forces with Mr Balls as the only way of ensuring his brother Ed Miliband did not win the contest. But the former Foreign Secretary turned down the idea as he thought he was strong enough to win on his own.

The possible pact is revealed in the latest edition of Lord Mandelson's memoirs, The Third Man. The ex-Business Secretary writes: "A concerted effort by David to forge a future leadership alliance with Ed Balls may have allowed him to carry the day. David was not persuaded because he felt he had enough strength on his own to win."

Lord Mandelson uses the updated version of his book to criticise Ed Miliband for not spelling out his political beliefs.

"I was struck by the fact he (Ed Miliband) gave no strong clue during the campaign as to what alternative to New Labour he envisaged.

"He was quick to say what he was against: essentially, Tory policies and Tony's policies. But he rarely said what he was for," he writes.
