THE number of British men having operations to remove so-called man boobs increased by 28 percent during the past year, according to figures released yesterday.
The reductions are now the second most popular cosmetic procedure for men in the UK, according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), which said that there were 741 operations in 2010 - up from 581 procedures in the previous year.
Gynecomastia, the official name for the condition, is the abnormal growth of breast tissue in males.
The process to remove the enlarged breasts involves taking out up to quarter of a gallon of excess tissue and takes around 30 minutes to complete.
"The public's interest in aesthetic surgery remained strong in spite of the economic downturn," said BAAPS president Fazel Fatah.
"Procedures showing the more considerable rise during this period seem to be, perhaps not surprisingly, concentrated on the most visible areas of the body."
