Youths held over airgun incident - The Press Association

Police have detained two teenagers after 11 youngsters were injured in an airgun attack near a school.

No-one was seriously hurt in the incident in Auchinleck, East Ayrshire, on Wednesday afternoon.

Officers were called to reports that an airgun had been fired in the town's Church Street, near Auchinleck Academy, at around 1.40pm.

Chief Superintendent John Thompson said five girls and six boys between the ages of 12 and 16 were struck by pellets, mainly on their legs and torsos.

It is understood one pupil remains in Crosshouse Hospital, near Kilmarnock.

Two males aged 15 and 18 are in police custody.

Local MP and MSP Cathy Jamieson said the incident, which happened less than half a mile from the school, highlighted the danger air weapons pose to communities.

Plans are currently under way to hand responsibility for airgun legislation from Westminster to the Scottish Government.

Education Secretary Michael Russell said: "My thoughts are with the pupils and families involved in this extremely disturbing incident - concern about the misuse of air weapons is widespread and long-standing in Scotland.

"The Scottish Government is in contact with both Strathclyde Police and East Ayrshire Council about what happened, and ministers are being kept fully informed."
