Canada agrees to arrest Tunisian ex-leader's in-law - AFP

OTTAWA — Canada has agreed to arrest the billionaire brother-in-law of ousted Tunisian president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon told Radio-Canada on Friday.

"We don't want a criminal like him in Canada and we will comply with a request from Tunisia," Cannon was quoted as saying by the public broadcaster.

The Tunisian embassy in Ottawa formally asked Canadian authorities on Thursday to arrest Belhassen Trabelsi, the eldest brother of Ben Ali's wife Leila Trabelsi.

Ottawa "will use every possible means necessary to get Trabelsi out of the country as soon as possible," Cannon added.

Trabelsi reportedly arrived in Montreal with his wife, children and a nanny aboard a private jet last week.

A government source told AFP that Trabelsi and his family's residency status in Canada have been revoked because they failed to meet the residency requirements, but they may still appeal the decision, or request asylum.

Tunisia is soon expected to request his expulsion.
