Home Secretary Theresa May accused of "cavalier" attitude to national secuirty ... - Mirror.co.uk

HOME Secretary Theresa May was slammed for her "cavalier" approach to security as police powers to hold terror suspects were cut to 14 days yesterday.

Her deputy Damian Green had promised to put in place measures so that the 28-day limit, which ended at midnight, could be brought back during a crisis.

But the Home Office said last night that no new powers were needed.

New shadow home Secretary Yvette Cooper warned the Government's strategy was "collapsing into ever-greater confusion".

Ms Cooper said: "This is chaotic and shambolic."

She also criticised the way findings of a terror review had been leaked ahead of an official announcement.

Ms May will say tomorrow that the Government has heeded Liberal Dem demands to scrap control orders, a form of arrest for suspects who cannot be tried.
