Defence: James Blunt's mother has come forward to defend her son on BBC Radio 4

James Blunt's mother has come forward to defend her son after criticism that the British music industry is too 'snobbish'.

Jane Blount sent an email to BBC Radio 4's Today programme insisting that artists should be judged on their musical talents rather than their backgrounds or upbringing.

Blount's comments come after record producer Pete Waterman made the accusation that the industry is being affected by those singers, mentioning Lily Allen, Coldplay's Chris Martin and Florence Welch as examples, who attended upmarket schools.

Waterman had suggested during the show that a privileged education made it difficult for performers to connect with large sections of their potential audience.

You're Beautiful singer Blunt was educated at two independent schools, including Harrow School, and after graduating from an army-sponsored university place, served as a captain in the Life Guards.

Blount's email read: 'I was most interested to hear Pete Waterman's thoughts on public school rock stars. His attitude is reflected by most of the critics in the U.K.

'My son James Blunt, who is hugely appreciated worldwide, receives harsh criticism here and we have, rather sadly, been aware that it is because of his background.

'We are relieved that on the whole James' fan base take no notice of the critics.'

Presenter Evan Davis told listeners: 'We're very pleased that Mrs Blount listens to the programme.'
