Chelsea defender Jeffrey Bruma: I was not to blame for Emile Heskey's goal in ... - Goal.com

Jeffrey Bruma has absolved himself of blame for Emile Heskey's goal in Chelsea's 3-3 draw with Aston Villa on Sunday.

Former England striker Heskey got in ahead of Bruma to nod the ball in from close range to put Villa 2-1 up.

The goal was part of a poor defensive display for Chelsea, who conceded a goal in stoppage time to allow Gerard Houllier's men to grab an unlikely point after John Terry had put the home side ahead with a minute of regular time to play.

Dutchman Bruma however, believes it was not his defending that was the cause for Heskey's goal.

"I was marking my man. I think everyone else was, or maybe someone forgot to mark his one," he told Chelsea TV.

Despite this, Bruma struggled to cope with Heskey for most of the game, and acknowledged he is a difficult physical presence.

He said: "He's a very strong guy. Obviously, when you play against a striker like him, you can't win every ball. You can't come always in front of him, because he's so strong."

Chelsea's insufficiencies at the back were brutally exposed and were clear indications that Carlo Ancelotti needs to sign a defender during the transfer window.

Bruma was dismayed by his side's lapse in concentration, which allowed Villa to work their way back into the game.

"Everyone knows Premier League games are always fast, quick, strong, so if we don't play our game then they will play their game and you will see that they will dominate us," the 19-year-old said.

"It can happen. At the end, we were dominating them again and then you saw that we scored a goal.

"After, I think we should've kept the ball and been strong in the marking because the guy from Villa had a free header."
