Vidic - The table doesn't lie - SkySports

Nemanja Vidic believes that Manchester United deserve to be top of the Premier League despite their critics.

United hold a slender one-point lead over Arsenal at the top the league following the Gunners' win over Stoke on Wednesday.

The Red Devils have attracted criticism for poor performances despite sitting at the league summit, an attitude that has clearly annoyed manager Sir Alex Ferguson in recent weeks.

A toothless Champions League performance against Marseille on Wednesday has done nothing to quiet the doubters, yet Vidic believes that United merit their current position.

"I am not surprised by where we are. The table shows where we should be," said the United defender.

"In some games we scored a goal in the last minute but there were others, at Everton and Fulham for instance, when we conceded them.

"We are where we are. We have the points we should have overall."

Title run-in

With a number of big games on the horizon, including a meeting with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday, there is a danger the United players could be caught looking too far ahead.

Vidic and his team-mates must first face Wigan on Saturday, knowing three points will be vital to stave off the growing threat from the Gunners.

"As players we don't have that kind of mentality," he said.

"We are just taking it game by game. We have important matches to play but the next one is Wigan. We have to take the three points. I believe we can.

"This is the period when the big games come. If we play well in the next three games and pick up points we will have confidence for the next game against Marseille. That is what we have to focus towards now."
