Schuey sure he'll be at the front - The Sun

UPBEAT Michael Schumacher is certain he will "fight for the top places" after a sudden surge of acceleration by Mercedes.

The seven-time world champ said the Mercedes team had done a "great job" by vastly improving their new W02 car during Formula One's pre-season tests.

Schuey, 42, ended the final test at Barcelona with the fastest time of all.

And he said: "We are going in the right direction, definitely.

"We should be in a good position this year. But as to whether we already have a winning car - for this assessment I would like to wait a few races.

"Anyway, we will be able to fight for the top places. And that is good news."

Schuey has been given firm backing by another F1 great, the 1979 champ Jody Scheckter.

The UK-based South African said: "I wouldn't bet against him, that's for sure.

"He's doing it for himself and it's a massive challenge, probably a bigger challenge than when he first came into F1."

Schumacher insists he is still fired up to make his comeback a success.

He added: "I never thought I would come back after three years and everything would be as before. I am a realist in this respect.

"It is true the re-acclimatisation has taken longer than I hoped.

"But I was always clear it would be difficult and there would be no guarantee of success. I am the type who is encouraged by challenges."

He added: "We are talking about a highly complex, highly competitive and ever-changing sport, so you cannot expect things will always run as desired.

"It is important to stay strong and keep concentrated on the work. We did that and I am convinced Mercedes will become a championship contender."

Despite his optimism, Schuey declared that rivals Red Bull "look strong" and tipped compatriot Sebastian Vettel for a back-to-back title.
