Sian O'Callaghan police search for second body in Gloucestershire - The Guardian

Police investigating the disappearance of Sian O'Callaghan have said they are now searching for a second body near the Cotswold market town of Northleach. On Thursday, officers found what they are certain is O'Callaghan's body near the village of Uffington, 15 miles east of Swindon.

At a press conference the officer leading the inquiry, Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, said police were also searching at a spot near Northleach in Gloucestershire.

A man being held on suspicion of kidnapping 22-year-old O'Callaghan and now two murders continued to be questioned. Police said they could go to magistrates to ask for more time to question the man, who has been named locally as 47-year-old taxi driver Chris Halliwell.

Fulcher did not give any more details about the possible identify of the second body, apart from saying it was thought to be that of an adult. He also said that there was "only one" outstanding missing person on the force's records, who disappeared "several years ago".

Fulcher said: "What I can say is that if there is one, it relates to an incident some years ago." He added: "It is not appropriate for me to reveal any detail."

He said detailed searches of the area near Northleach took place overnight. "It is a painstaking and slow process."

Fulcher said O'Callaghan's body had been "recovered" from the spot near Uffington and was undergoing a postmortem.

Wiltshire police refused to say if they had been in touch with Avon and Somerset police over the unsolved murder of Melanie Hall, 25, who went missing after leaving a nightclub in Bath in 1996. Her body was found at the side of the M5 in Gloucestershire in 2009.

Fulcher added: "We do not at this stage know what we are dealing with."

Fulcher gave more details of how the arrest of the suspect came about. He said police had a "breakthrough" on Tuesday when CCTV footage indicated O'Callaghan had been abducted by an individual driving a green Toyota Avensis estate car.

Fulcher added that after police made the arrest, the suspect took him personally to two spots – one near Uffington where O'Callaghan's body was found, the other near Northleach.

O'Callaghan went missing after leaving a nightclub in Swindon in the early hours of Saturday.

Fulcher said her mobile phone records showed it was in Savernake forest, 12 miles south of Swindon, 32 minutes later. He believes the body was subsequently moved to the spot near Uffington where it was found.
