“Son of Roadblock” - Independent (blog)

Son of Roadblock, eagle eyeI thought Ed Miliband did quite well at Prime Minister's Questions because David Cameron seemed not to be answering his point about European competition law applying to the NHS. The Prime Minister seemed to think that it was enough (a) to point out that Labour's manifesto, written by Miliband, supported competition in the NHS; and (b) to call Miliband "Son of Roadblock" (a reference to Gordon Brown's role as the "roadblock" to public service reform under Tony Blair).

Still, Miliband thinks it is enough just to use the word market in the same sentence as NHS and public opinion will be on his side. Unfortunately, it probably will be, not least because the Government is doing such a poor job of communicating its reforms.

But what is the problem with competition law applying to the provision of health services that are free at the point of use?

Anyone?
