Libyan Oil Minister flees to Tunisia - Xinhua

BEIJING,May 18 (Xinhuanet) -- A Tunisian security source has said that Libya's oil minister, who is also chairman of the National Oil Corporation has defected to neighboring Tunisia. Another Tunisian source says Shokri Ghanem is on his way to the Tunisian capital Tunis.

Libyan rebels also say they have information that the 68-year-old minister has defected. A government official in Tripoli has denied the claim. The oil chief- Shokri Ghanem is an internationally respected technocrat credited with liberalizing Libya's economy and energy sector. His defection,if confirmed, would deal a major blow to Gaddafi's efforts to shore up his 41-year rule.
