THE designer responsible for the controversial hat worn by Princess Beatrice at the royal wedding is on his way to Australia.
Philip Treacy was made international style ambassador for this year's Melbourne Cup carnival in November by the Victoria Racing Club. The Irish milliner to the stars will attend Derby Day and Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington, and will be a judge in Fashions on the Field.
He joins a line-up of international celebrity guests including Sarah Jessica Parker and Joan Collins.
Treacy has designed hats for everyone from Madonna to Lady Gaga and designed 80 pieces of headwear for the April nuptials of Prince William to Catherine Middleton. However, it was the dusty pink creation he fashioned for Princess Beatrice, pictured, that drew criticism from fashion commentators, who variously described it as a pretzel, toilet seat and a model of the female reproductive system.
It was later auctioned on eBay, raising £81,000 ($122,885) for the children's charity UNICEF.
Meanwhile, Princess Beatrice, 23, is expected to take up a series of internships after graduating from university, Buckingham Palace announced. Increasing Beatrice's experience, particularly in business and philanthropy, is designed to ''complement'' her position as a member of the royal family, the palace said in a statement.
She is expected to continue her work with Children in Crisis, which was set up by her mother, and the Teenage Cancer Trust.
The Princess was watched by her parents, the Duke of York and his former wife Sarah, Duchess of York, as she joined colleagues for a graduation ceremony at the University of London's Goldsmiths College.
The royal studied for a BA (Hons) degree in history and history of ideas. Before the ceremony, the Duchess of York tweeted her excitement: ''Beatrice graduating today from Goldsmiths So proud of her''.
