(CNN) -- A last minute penalty broke Scottish hearts on Saturday as the Czech Republic salvaged a 2-2 draw in their Group I match at Hampden Park.
Scotland were moments away from a vital three points when Dutch referee Kevin Blom pointed to the spot in the 90th minute after substitute Jan Rezek went down after a challenge from Danny Wilson.
Television replays suggested the Scottish defender had made little, if any contact with the Czech striker. But it didn't matter, as Michal Kadlec stepped up to rifle the ball into the roof of the net.
Craig Levein's side needed all three points as they look to finish second behind Group I's runaway leaders, Spain.
They got off to good start with a goal on the stroke of halftime -- Darren Fletcher playing in Kenny Miller to slot home his 15th international goal.
Scotland's defense held out for most of the second half before Jaroslav Pasil headed home a 78th-minute equalizer for the visitors.
But Scottish hopes soared again five minutes later when this time Miller turned provider for Fletcher who delivered a cool finish to restore the lead.
But Kadlec's late strike thwarted them, leaving Scotland in third place, five points adrift of the Czechs, but having played a game less.
"We did so many good things today. We showed great resilience and played very well at times and to lose the match through circumstances we can't control is hard to take," Levein said, AFP reported.
"The players are very angry as you can imagine after that game today as they did everything that was asked of them and still didn't get the points," the Scottish coach added, AFP reported.
Scotland take on Lithuania next Tuesday, with Spain in action against Liechtenstein.
