Apple tends to announce updates to existing products close to the release date. The iPad 2, for example, was announced on March 2 this year - nine days before it was released in the US. With the new version of the iPad expected in the Spring, it's unlikely that Apple would announce it so early in 2012.
However, other rumours have suggested that Apple will announce the next version of the iPad on February 24, which was the birthday of the company's late chief executive, Steve Jobs. An announcement on that date would fit with a March release.
