For most companies, the corporate logo is more than just a name set in some kind of fancy font. It is a way to connect with customers on a level that reminds them of why they want a company's specific product.
As such, it's hard to imaging Coke without the classic red label and white, old-time Coca-Cola script that goes back more than a century, or Apple without, well, its apple icon that has a small piece cut out.
Then there is Microsoft, the world's largest software company. Microsoft hasn't always been known for being the most innovative tech giant, but it is seeking to change that with a new slate of products and, as of Thursday, a new logo for the first time since Ronald Reagan was president. The new logo is the fifth one in Microsoft's 37-year history, but the first new logo since 1987.
Microsoft unveiled its new logofour square tiles, one each of red, green, yellow and blue, next to a softer rendering of the Microsoft name in the Segoe font, which Microsoft owns on the company's Web site Thursday. Microsoft is bringing out the new logo in time for the fall release of its Windows 8 operating system, as well as upcoming new versions of products such as Windows Phone and Office.
It is also the first time Microsoft has used something other than the company's name in its logo, but the four colored tiles aren't unfamiliar to Microsoft or its customers. Each one is associated with one of Microsoft's core products such as Word and Excel.
