Should BBC Breakfast move back to London? - The Guardian (blog)

It moved to Salford from London less than six months ago, shrugging off doubts that the show would have trouble attracting enough guests – celebrity or political – prepared to travel north for an early-morning appearance. But with the sofa looking somewhat short of high-quality bottoms, might the BBC have to move Breakfast back to London after all?

The corporation is discussing whether part of the show might be better broadcast from the capital in an effort to up the calibre of guests appearing on it, reports the Daily Mail.

While the opening few hours of the show would still be broadcast from Salford, the final segment – from 8.30am to 9.15am – could return to London, possibly under the title Breakfast Extra. That would echo the way ITV runs its Breakfast programmes, with Daybreak finishing at 8.30 to make way for Lorraine. (Although whether Breakfast should be taking tips from ITV is rather a moot point given Daybreak's short and troubled history).

Broadcasting the majority of the programme from Salford would allow the BBC to save face, of course – although some might suggest that the whole of Breakfast should return to the corporation's London base.

The BBC has denied it is considering the move. "There are no plans to move any part of BBC Breakfast back to London. On the contrary, the show is working very well from Salford and we're delighted with the calibre of guests and experts regularly appearing," said a spokesman.

So what do you think? Is Breakfast lacking in the kind of guests you'd expect and want to watch – and if so, is the answer moving the show back to London, in part or in whole? Or is the lack of the usual suspects actually rather refreshing? Let us know below.
