AFP: Officer arrested over "plebgate" leak - AFP

LONDON — A police officer has been arrested over the leak of details about former chief whip Andrew Mitchell's outburst against officers patrolling Downing Street, Scotland Yard said.

"The Directorate of Professional Standards (DPS) arrested a police constable in the Diplomatic Protection Group, on suspicion of misconduct in a public office, at 8.15pm on Saturday," said a police statement.

"The officer was taken to a London police station. He was bailed this morning to return on a date in January.

The officer is suspected of being involved in the leaking of information to national newspapers and has been suspended from duty.

"The arrest is linked to previous inquiries by the MPS as to how internal MPS information was obtained by national newspapers following an incident at Downing Street in September," added the statement.

"The officer arrested was not on duty at the time of the incident in Downing Street."

Mitchell quit in October amid accusations he had sworn at an officer and called him a "pleb" after a row erupted over the minister's use of the main gate.

He insisted in a letter to David Cameron that he had not used the words "pleb" or "moron" but admitted swearing at the officer.
