Boxing Day sales begin online - Sky News Australia

Updated: 05:13, Tuesday December 25, 2012

It's not Boxing Day - yet - but that hasn't stopped major retailers from kicking off their online sales before many people have opened their first Christmas present or enjoyed their first bite of festive breakfast.

David Jones Group Executive Operations Cate Daniels says the department store's first online clearance sales start today.

She says Boxing Day will be the biggest trading day of the year for David Jones, with people this year being able to research what they want online before buying in store.

Shoppers have taken advantage of marathon opening hours at big city shopping centres as they traded overnight.

Australian National Retailers Association Chief Executive Margy Osmond says spending this Christmas was up on last year, but overall it's been a fairly flat Christmas for retail.

Ms Osmond says retailers are hoping for more interest rate cuts in the first part of 2013 to stimulate spending in what is traditionally the softest part of the retail year.
