O'Dowd hits high note at capital premiere - Irish Independent

IT sounds like a version of 'The Commitments' from Down Under.

'Bridesmaids' star Chris O'Dowd was on the red carpet in Dublin last night for the premiere of his latest film 'The Sapphires'.

The 33-year-old was joined at the Savoy Cinema by his wife, TV presenter Dawn Porter, who he married in August.

'The Sapphires' tells the story of a Jimmy Rabbitte-type Irish manager in Australia during 1968 who discovers an all-girl group performing at a small-town talent competition.

"There are similarities with 'The Commitments' but this movie is not as deliberately funny. There is something far darker going on," O'Dowd says.

But O'Dowd admits vocals are not his forte. "Put it this way: singing is not my day job. But with soul music, it's not necessarily about being in tune," he adds.
