Liverpool completes Carroll capture - Xinhua

LONDON, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- English Premier League side Liverpool broke the club's transfer record on Monday to sign England striker Andy Carroll from Newcastle.

Carroll signed a five-year contract with Liverpool in a transfer reported to be worth 35 million pounds (56 million U.S. dollars), which would be a record fee for a British player.

That beats the 29.1 million pounds (44.5 million U.S. dollars) Manchester United paid Leeds for defender Rio Ferdinand in 2002.

"Andy Carroll has tonight completed his transfer from Newcastle United to Liverpool FC and signed a 5-year deal that will keep him at Anfield until 2016," Liverpool said in a statement.

The 22-year-old Carroll, who signed an improved five-year deal with Newcastle in October, has scored 11 goals in 19 Premier League games this season.
