US Sen John McCain called for increased military support Friday for Libyas rebels, including providing weapons, training and giving close air support to the opposition in the battle to oust Muammar Gaddafi.
Meanwhile, French president Nicolas Sarkozy has agreed in principle with Libyas opposition Transitional National Council to travel to the rebel stronghold of Benghazi, a top presidential aide said Friday. Although Sarkozy has informed the opposition group, the trip is not imminent, the aide said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
McCains visit came a day after the US started flying armed drones to bolster NATO firepower and try to break a battlefield stalemate with Gaddafis forces. McCain said he supported the use of the drones so we can better identify Gaddafis forces as they seek to conceal themselves in civilian areas.
US Marine Gen James Cartwright said drones are uniquely suited for urban areas, with their ability to fly lower and counteract Gaddafi forces tactic of traveling in civilian vehicles. The first mission was flown late Thursday, but the aircraft, turned back due to poor weather without firing, Cartwright said.
In Misrata, rebels raised their flag atop an eight-storey building in celebration after driving pro-government snipers out of it and neighbouring buildings Thursday.
