Youth unemployment jumps to record high - Telegraph.co.uk

"It's now crucial to give young people the support they need to prevent them from falling into the downward spiral of long-term joblessness. Transforming these young lives will have a huge impact on their families, communities as well as on Britain's economy."

The figures also showed a rise in average weekly pay in November to £455, up by 2.1 per cent on a year earlier.

Prime Minister David Cameron said any increase in unemployment was a matter for "huge concern", but he pointed out that the number of people claiming Jobseeker's Allowance had fallen.

The number claiming Jobseeker's Allowance fell by 4,100 last month to 1.46 million.

Employment Minister Chris Grayling said: "These figures serve to underline the scale of the challenge we face. We inherited the largest budget deficit in peacetime history and high levels of worklessness, which we are determined to bring down by rebalancing the economy and supporting private sector jobs growth."
