David Villa backs Fernando Torres' decision to leave Liverpool & tips him to ... - Goal.com

Spain and Barcelona hit-man David Villa has backed his international strike partner Fernando Torres to be a hit at Chelsea after his £50 million move from Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

Torres had a debut to forget against his former club on Sunday as he was substituted before watching his new team crumble to a home defeat after Raul Meireles' goal, but Villa believes his compatriot has made the right decision.

Villa told Betfair: "Liverpool are not enjoying a good year. I am totally convinced that his move to Chelsea will go well and he will succeed in London.

"It's been very difficult for him, but I'm pleased because I know he wanted to go there. He is very happy and I wish him well."

Torres started up front alongside Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka though Chelsea were unable to break down Kenny Dalglish's determined Liverpool side, Torres was substituted in the 65th minute after a below par performance.

Villa went on to say that he believes Liverpool's new big money signings, Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, will be "worth every penny".

"Each year there are big transfers of this type," he said. "It's normal. All teams need to strengthen when they want to win things.

"Liverpool needed to reinforce after the sale of Fernando. They are two great players who are worth every penny. I'm sure they'll be a hit with the fans."

Liverpool host Wigan Athletic this weekend as they look to continue their recent impressive form that has seen them rise to sixth in the league.
