A MAN was killed and a police officer wounded in a terrifying rush-hour shooting yesterday.
The officer is said to have been hit before colleagues were forced to return fire.
Scotland Yard refused to release details of the incident in Ferry Lane at Tottenham Hale, North London around 6.15pm.
But they stressed it was not terrorist related.
A spokesman would only say: "One male was pronounced dead at the scene and an officer was taken to hospital."
Local resident David Akinsanya, 46, came upon the scene moments later.
He was told by a witness that an officer had twice shouted to the man to stop. The witness, who lives close by, then heard four shots.
Mr Akinsanya added: "There were lots of helicopters and sirens. There had been a surveillance van on the same corner a couple of times earlier this week."
Another local said: "It was mayhem. I could see the police were trying to give CPR to someone. The whole street was shut down."
In accordance with standard procedure for gun incidents, the Independent Police Complaints Commission was immediately called in.
An IPCC spokesman said: "We do not know the order the shots were fired. We understand the officer was shot first, then the male."
