Human rights legislation leaves Britain vulnerable to terror attacks, David Cameron claimed yesterday.
The PM argued that judges sitting in the European Court of Human Rights were distorting its founding principles with rulings that would leave it "discredited".
Last week the court ruled that radical cleric Abu Qatada cannot be deported because of torture in Jordan.
The PM told the Council of Europe in Strasbourg: "We do have a real problem when it comes to foreign nationals who threaten our security. Yet there are circumstances in which you cannot try them, you cannot detain them and you cannot deport them."
But the Refugee Council's Donna Covey said: "The court has protected the rights of many UK residents."
