US embassy in Yemen stormed - latest - Telegraph.co.uk

16.40 (11.40) Libya says it has made a number of arrests in connection with the attack in Benghazi but has released few details.

15.50 (10.50) The US Embassy in Cairo's Twitter feed has been causing more than its fair share of problems in the last few days. They put out the tweets that Romney seized on as an apology for US values and this morning has been mixing it up with the Muslim Brotherhood on Twitter. They called out the Brothers for saying nice things in English and then anti-Americanisms in Arabic but have since deleted their tweets. Luckily for us, Charles Whitfield has grabbed the screenshot:

15.20 (10.20) Hillary Clinton is addressing the film that first sparked these protests across the Middle East. She calls it "disgusting and reprehensible" and "appears to have a deeply cynical purpose". However, she says there is "no justification" for responding with violence. Clinton says that the US can't stop the distribution of provocative videos but wouldn't do even if it could, out of respect for freedom of speech. She reminds all governments that they have a responsibility to protect diplomats and embassies says "any responsible leader" must condemn the violence.

14.40 (09.40) Clashes continue outside the US Embassy in Cairo, the scene of the original protest on Tuesday.

14.00 Yemen's president has apologised to President Barack Obama for the embassy attack and has ordered an investigation into the incident.

13.28 Senator John McCain tells Sky News it is vital that Egypt "does not turn into an extremist country" and condemns the killing of Ambassador Chris Stevens in Libya:

12.56 German emergency services have evacuated the visa section of the United States consulate in Berlin after an employee fell ill after opening a suspicious envelope that was handed to her by a visitor, a police spokesman said. It was not clear whether the incident was linked to protests over the ant-Islam film that was made in America.

Television footage showed investigators in special protection suits at the building and staff waiting outside.

"The lady felt unwell and reported a metallic taste in her mouth," the police spokesman said.

A spokesman for the fire services, who were also at the scene, said three people had reported breathing difficulties.

The US embassy could not immediately be reached for comment.

12.44 The Afghan authorities have ordered that YouTube be shut down indefinitely to prevent people watching the anti-Muslim film, hovernment sources have told Reuters.

12.42 A Yemeni protester has reportedly been shot dead outside the US embassy.

11.50 Iran's parliament speaker Ali Larijani said the film, Innocence of Muslims was "abhorrent", according to a report in state-controlled Pres TV. He reportedly added:

11.47 Iranian students were protesting outside the Swiss embassy in Tehran. Additional security forces were deployed around the embassy, which looks after US interests in Iran where Washington has no diplomatic relations, Fars news agency reported. It gave no estimate of the size of the protest.

Members of one student organisation present called on Muslim nations to "cut their relations with the United States and demonstrate their religious values against the colonial system", Fars said.

Protesters expressed support for demonstrators in Libya and Egypt, shouting slogans including "Muslims unite" and "Mohammad is God's prophet," the report said.

11.32 Footage on al-Jazeera shows protesters scaling the walls of the compound and waving Islamic flags.

11.11 Afghan President Hamid Karzai has cancelled an official visit to Norway amid anti-US protests across several Muslim countries.

Karzai's spokesman Aimal Faizi said the trip will be held at a later date. He did not say why the trip has been postponed.

The Norwegian Foreign Ministry said in a statement that Karzai postponed the trip because he felt he needed to stay at home in light of the serious events in some Arab countries.

11.05 Egypt's Islamist President Mohamed Morsi has slammed "attacks" on the Muslim prophet Mohammed, while also stressing that he condemned violence:

QuoteWe Egyptians reject any kind of assault or insult against our prophet. I condemn and oppose all who... insult our prophet.

(But) it is our duty to protect our guests and visitors from abroad... I call on everyone to take that into consideration, to not violate Egyptian law... to not assault embassies.

11.02 Hundreds of protesters have stormed the US embassy in Sanna, the capital of Yemen. Young demonstrators shouting "we redeem, Messenger of God" smashed windows of the security offices outside the embassy with stones and burned cars before breaking through the main gate of the heavily fortified compound in eastern Sanaa. Others held aloft banners declaring 'Allah is Greatest'.

Tyres blazed outside the compound and protesters scaled the walls.
