He's no "Wannabe" lover. Russell Brand is dating Spice Girl Geri Halliwell — at least according to UK tabloid The Sun — and if the paper's fairy-tale of blurry cell phone photos and anonymous tips is to be believed, this celebrity relationship is so "serious" that Brand ditched his last girlfriend for a little bit of Ginger.
But let's start with the origins of this romance rumour: according to The Sun, it all began in July when the Spice Girls and Brand were rehearsing for the Olympic closing ceremony. He must have seen her tottering on top of a black cab. She must have seen him doddering through "I Am the Walrus." And, no stranger than anything seen in that televised spectacle, it was love (according to The Sun).
After the production wrapped, Brand even told UK paper The Mirror: "I've got Spice Girls mania all over again now, it's like going back to 1996," minus all drugs and platform wedges, one assumes. "I've got a massive crush on Geri Halliwell too, so everything in the world was as it should be."
Between that — and a Tweeted photo of Brand hanging with all five Spice Girls at the Closing Ceremony — the comic's comments were initially taken for the usual post-game prattle. But The Sun reports they've spotted Brand and Halliwell out on several dates, including a guided tour of Hampton Court last Saturday, which they took with Halliwell's six-year-old daughter, Bluebell.
"They seemed like they were having a really great time, holding hands and chatting — it was 100 per cent obvious they were a couple," one witness told the Sun — which also ran a series of wonky snapshots from the stars' afternoon out.
"Things are getting very serious between them — they're a proper couple now," another spy told The Sun. "They had met several times in the past, but really got to know each other during the Olympics.
"People thought Russell was joking at the time, when he said he had a crush on Geri all over again, but it was true.
"They just clicked — they have so much in common."
Like, for example, being British? And, as another Sun source clarifies: "They've exactly the same sense of humour and are serious about clean living."
Brand, 37, famously divorced Katy Perry earlier this year, and was last linked to a yoga instructor named Isabella Brewster — though as one source tells The Sun: "He ended his relationship with Isabella Brewster, and is now dating Geri properly."
The Daily Mail cites a few other eyewitness encounters of Brand and Ginger Spice in the wild — including one sighting of a "romantic date" on Hamstead Heath.
That said, neither party is confirming the romance. Brand's reps have yet to comment. As for Halliwell's, her people told the Daily Mail: "They're just friends and have been out a few times, there's not much else to add at this stage.
