Jamie Oliver was never going to be an easy act to follow, but Philips seems to somehow have managed today's star-turn well enough, following the celebrity chef's IFA 212 guest appearance by launching a brand new LED TV.
Cookers aside, the Series 9000 was the standout product at Philips' press conference in Berlin earlier today, with the television set to be offered in two models: a 46in version and a 60in flavour. Even from the middle of the room, the Series 9000's image quality really caught the eye, something Philips puts down party to the new LED set featuring Ambilight Spectra XL and a 'Moth Eye Filter,' which helps project a warm glow yet also reduces glare, respectively. It also features an impressive 150,000,000 dynamic contrast ratio and, like any decent TV these days, comes 3D-ready and supports the Internet.
In fact, the Dutch company's TP Vision arm, who is ultimately responsible for the set, described the TV as "super smart." Certainly, it has some interesting selling points.The Series 9000's remote, for one, comes fitted with a QWERTY keyboard on its backside, making it easier than ever for couch potatoes to make use of the set's online and cloud features.
"We have been pioneering smart television since 2008. Right now, 80 per cent of our product range is smart TV. Very soon, that will become 100 per cent. We are one of the founding fathers of the Smart TV Alliance because we believe in an open eco-system," said Maarten de Vries, CEO of TP Vision at the event.
Chief among the web-based features is a social media app that lets you tweet about what you're watching without having to move away from the entertainment hub. The social software also comes with a real-time feed to connect you to other people tuning in to the same programming, so you no longer need to have your best mate nearby to start an inane conversation about why the book is so much better.
The clever set will also support BlinkBox - the YouTube film rental service - and Deezer music streaming too.
Pricing and exact details of availability weren't announced today - it's unlikely to come cheap and should start appearing in the next month or so, if experience is anything to go by.
