The former girlfriend of Vincent Tabak who had once dreamed of marrying the murderer has extended her "deepest sorrow" to Joanna Yeates' family.

Tanja Morson, 34, had initially stood by her boyfriend when police questioned him over the 25-year-old's death, finding it impossible to believe he was a killer.

But she quickly turned her back on Tabak when he confessed to a prison chaplain that he had strangled the landscape architect.

In her only statement, Miss Morson, said: "I would like to extend my deepest sorrow and sympathy to the Yeates family for their loss.

He fooled us. He fooled everybody. There was a guardian angel for us, but not unfortunately for Joanna.

"I am thankful to the judge, the jury, the barristers and solicitors for all their ongoing attention and professionalism."

On Friday, Tabak was jailed for life with a minimum term of 20 years after a Bristol Crown Court jury found him guilty of murdering Miss Yeates.

As Miss Morson comes to grips with the verdict of her boyfriend of 18 months - and further allegations of his secret pornography fetish - her father Geoffrey told the Sunday Mirror how Tabak had "fooled everybody".

He added that a "guardian angel" had saved his daughter from the 33-year-old Dutch engineer who he had once thought would become his son-in-law.

The 68-year-old lawyer said: "We have gone from a position at the time of Vincent's arrest of a total belief in his innocence to the point where we accept there may be more for the police to investigate.

"He fooled us. He fooled everybody. There was a guardian angel for us, but not unfortunately for Joanna."

Tabak and Miss Morson had been seeing each other since meeting on an online dating website in November 2008.

Their relationship developed and by the following June they had set up home together on Canynge Road in Clifton, Bristol.

In October 2010, Miss Yeates and her boyfriend Greg Reardon moved into the neighbouring ground floor flat, where not even two months later she was killed.

Miss Yeates' father David said no one could have predicted what lay behind Tabak's facade.

But the IT worker said he believed Tabak had killed his daughter because he feared losing Miss Morson if she found out he had made a pass at his neighbour.

He added: "We felt that, if it wasn't Jo, it would have been someone in the future."
