The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence - SETI - project looks for alien life in a one, main specific way - scanning for radio signals deliberately beamed towards earth from distant stars.

But two astronomers suggest that we may be missing evidence much closer to home.

Two scientists at Arizona State University have suggested that alien life may have 'left traces on the moon in the form of an artifact or surface modification of lunar features' - and that alien 'footprints' on the moon would last far longer than radio signals.

Alien life

The detailed moon maps created by Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter may be the best place to look for alien life, say scientists - evidence such as trails or debris would remain there for millions of years, and be easier to 'catch' than radio signals

'Evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence could come from any signatures of non-human technology,' say the scientists in a paper published in Acta Astronautica.

The scientists say that any alien mission to our solar system is liable to have occurred long ago - but that the surface of the moon could preserve the signs for millions of years.

The photographs already captured by Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter - currently mapping the moon's surface to 0.5m resolution - provides an easy, cheap way to look for these signs.

'Although there is only a tiny probability that alien technology would have left traces on the moon in the form of an artifact or surface modification of lunar features, it has the virtue of being close, and of preserving traces for an immense duration.'

Nasa's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is mapping the moon to 0.5m resolution - the scientists suggest that the huge number of images from the orbiter could be a good starting place for a search for alien life

'The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) would have a high impact if successful,' say the scientists, in a paper published in Acta Astronautica.

'Therefore it makes sense to widen the search as much as possible. To date, SETI has been dominated by seeking deliberately beamed radio messages.'

Mike, Somewhere: I think the problem is the idea that UFO = extraterrestrial spaceship. Just because there are unidentified (and probably unknown) luminous phenomena in the atmosphere does not mean the aliens are here. On the other hand, there is virtually no doubt that UFOs in the stricter sense (Unidentified Flying Objects) exist. And there's no doubt at all for me, because I saw one at relatively close range (about 400 ft) in 1968. I saw no evidence that it was of a technological nature, just a big orange luminous egg.

If you read Dr. Arthur C. Clarke (the man who invented the Satellite) he believes Aliens left some signalling machines on Moon for us to fnd when we are advanced enough. I think that is very reasonable and probabale. Maybe when they visited us, we were too primitive and they did not want to come back again but they wanted to check our progress. Even human scientists do that, so why not them..?

the say that you can read a newspaper on the ground from a spy satelite photos....yet EVERY photo released by the USA of a moon photo is 'almost' out of focus and 'almost' unuseable.......proove you went to the moon, release some decent photos that we can actually see footprints and buggy tracks !.....that is if you actuall went there and it wasn't a 'con' just to beat the Russians!

I think any "aliens" smart enough to engage in intergalactic flight would see the moon for what it is, a dead rock with no value whatsoever, so why go strolling around? Which brings to mind something I've always been curious about; If these aliens are indeed so advanced then why do they have exterior lights on their spacecraft? Countless UFO sitings reveal that the so-called advanced aliens are not so advanced afterall as witness after witness have described the exterior lighting when relating to the media what they saw. As I understand it exterior lighting on aircraft of any kind is there to help prevent mid-air collisions and aid in landing and occasionally, aid in seeing objects on the ground. Wouldn't it stand to reason that such an advanced species would have easily conquered these issues therefore negating the need for exterior lighting? Eh, maybe the lights are used as some sort of advanced probe, who knows?

even if they did find evidence of alien life, im surely it will be highly classified, they wont let the public know

Read behind the news. George bush junior cancelled Star Wars, while Obama ended the U.S. presence in Space. Something is coming, they're preparing an "epic show", bigger than 9/11 tv drama. Endless wars to weaken mankind, so the ""enlightened ones" can become masters of the world. End the war on terror, end their power grab.

Drivel.Utter drivel. What a waste of time and money! Science! The last bastion of gullibles.

The moon is really a giant space ship controlled by lizard aliens who use it to control the weather on the earth. Don't you peopke know anything?

If they are anything like humans? look for rubbish dumps.

Even if we tuned into alien broadcasts could we understand their language? On Earth there are hundreds of languages.
