Fairness. There would be cuts but they would be fair. Now 1,200,000 British families want to know what is fair about a reform that will rob a single-earner household living on £42,476 per annum of thousands of pounds a year when some dual-income families raking in more than £80,000 will not lose a penny. That is the impact of the government's simplistic changes to Child Benefit (CB), which will be scrapped from next January in households where one parent is on the higher tax rate. It took less than 30 minutes from George Osborne's announcement last October for commentators to spot this flaw in his plans. Hints of a change of heart by the Prime Minister this week were denied yesterday. The cuts to CB, designed to save £2.5bn a year, will go ahead.
