Ferguson expecting tough opener - ESPN.co.uk

Wayne Rooney will look to continue his blistering start to the season as Manchester United open up their Champions League quest at Benfica, but Sir Alex Ferguson has one eye on Chelsea at the weekend.

Rooney has been likened to Pele by Ferguson and the England star is brimming with confidence after hitting eight goals in the opening weeks of the season.

Benfica are fully aware of Rooney's quality, but they may not be able to plan fully as Ferguson has hinted he may shuffle his pack.

"We are coming into a period where we have the game tomorrow, then Chelsea on Sunday, Leeds United on Tuesday, then Stoke away on the following Saturday," Ferguson said. "Obviously the squad will be used but first of all we are giving a lot of consideration to Benfica. I have not decided [who will play]. I have a few things to think about. But it wouldn't worry me at all to play the [same] team that is doing well."

Definitely out is Rio Ferdinand who has not travelled as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury. Tom Cleverley is also out after damaging his foot against Bolton.

The 19-man squad that travelled to Benfica will be briefed on the threat carried by Jorge Jesus's squad.

"We know all about Pablo Aimar," Ferguson said. "Aimar played against us for Valencia a few years ago, he is a very talented player. [Ezequiel] Garay and Luisao at the back are also very experienced, good players.

"It won't be easy for us, it will be a difficult game. But it will be difficult for Benfica too."

Key battle:
Ferguson has touched on the threat posed by Aimar who will be key for Benfica, but even though they are on their travels United are likely to be on the front foot, such is their confidence at present, and how the Portuguese cope with Benfica will be pivotal.

Prediction: 1-2

Odds: United can be backed at even money with Bet365 and that is not the worst bet you will see this week. An interesting punt is Aimar to score first and United to win - which is available at 70/1 (All odds accurate at time of writing)
