Children as young as two are using iPhones and iPads to access free apps that entertain and educate them.
But parents are divided about whether they provide real benefits, or are simply a free babysitting device.
There are close to 15,000 educational apps available on the Apple Store and about one third of those are free.
The app Alpha Writer, for example, teaches children how to read and spell, while other apps teach children how to play instruments and games like chess.
