Most of the world's gold came from a huge bombardment of meteorites around 4.3billion years ago, scientists believe.
And there are enough precious metals at the Earth's core to cover the planet with a layer four metres thick, a study of ancient rocks has found.
"Most precious metals have been added to our planet by lucky coincidence," said Bristol University's Dr Matthias Willbold in the journal Nature.
