Wales weather: Ice warning with snow and gales expected - BBC News

Motorists are being warned that ice could cause travel problems in parts of Wales on Tuesday as temperatures plunge, with snow in some areas.

The snow will fall mainly on higher ground, but gale force winds are also expected on the west coast.

A Met Office yellow "be aware" warning is in place for icy conditions, following wintry showers and strong winds overnight.

Heavy snow closed schools and brought traffic to a halt last month.

Many roads were closed, including some mountain routes for several days, and power cuts affected more than 1,000 people in parts of the country.

The Met Office warning for ice is in place overnight and will remain until 11:00 GMT Tuesday for most of Wales, apart from the south west and extreme north west.

"Surfaces will remain wet from earlier showers and from continued showers of rain, sleet and snow, allowing ice to form," said the Met Office.

"The public should be aware of the risk of icy stretches on roads on pavements."

Forecasters say there could be about 1 - 2cm (0.4 - 0.8in) of snow inland on Tuesday, with most on higher ground and at least 2-5cm (0.8 - 2in) on some hills and mountains.

High winds could also be a problem with gales on the the west coast and on high ground.

Wintry showers are likely to turn to rain later on in the day.
