Ireland unveils deep budget cuts - Boston Globe

The plan, unveiled as crowds chanting antigovernment slogans swelled throughout the day, is the first installment of a bigger blueprint designed to find $20 billion in savings over three years. The measures are needed to reduce the nation's debt and deficit, and to help pay for a banking crisis that has tattered Ireland's finances, leading to a significant weakening of Prime Minister Brian Cowen's government.
