VANDALS have destroyed a sacred tree in what is believed to a revenge attack on the landowner after his company went bust owing £16million.
The crown of the iconic Holy Thorn in Glastonbury, Somerset, was hacked off, leaving just a 6ft stump protected by an iron cage.
According to legend, the tree planted in 1952 at Wearyall Hill is related to one planted by Joseph of Aramathea. It is a site of pilgrimage for travellers around the globe.

Sprigs are traditionally cut off and sent to the Queen as a festive dining table decoration each year.
Earlier this week tree custodian and landowner Edward James, 70, was arrested after the currency exchange firm he was a director of collapsed.
Glastonbury mayor John Coles said "I'm so angry. It's mindless. Why do it? Whether someone has some sort of vendetta, I don't know."
