POLICE investigating the death of a woman who was savaged by a dog at her home in south London were urgently seeking the man believed to be the animal's owner.
Barbara Williams, in her 40s, suffered multiple injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene on Thursday night.
Scotland Yard said the dog - believed to be a Belgian mastiff - was shot dead by police firearms officers.
Police said they want to speak with Alex Blackburn Smith, who is believed to be Williams' partner and the animal's owner.
"We are in the process of contacting the lady's next-of-kin. We also urgently want to speak to Alex Blackburn Smith, who is the main occupier of the premises, in relation to the circumstances of the incident to establish facts," said Detective Chief Superintendent Guy Ferguson.
There was at least one other person at the property at the time of the attack, but no one else was injured. Police and paramedics were first called at 8:57pm local time Thursday, following reports of an animal attack.
Belgian mastiffs, which can grow to a height of 32 inches and weigh as much as 60kgs, are not classified as a threat under the UK's Dangerous Dogs Act.
The law bans four kinds of dog - pit bull terrier, Japanese tosa, dogo Argentino and fila Brasileiro.
